Manodharma in carnatic music
INDIAN CLASSICALS -CARNATIC MUSIC
SCOPE FOR MANODHARMA, BHAVA AND RASAS UNLIMITED HOW IT IS STRUCTURALLY BUILT INTO BY OUR NADHA BRIHMAMS
This write up restricts itself- to illustrate how unlimited scope for MANODHARMA is built into our musical systems, especially in carnatic music-- as the introductory material- to experimentally establish and illustrate the same.
What is Manodharma? I feel that it is it is better grasped and appreciated by comparing the glows of a pushparaga stone and a diamond. While Pushparaga has a constant brightness, diamond simply scintillates. Tilt diamond, the spectrum of colours emitted is non repeatable, unpredictable, not definable and limitless. This is generally spoken off as “Poorippu” in Tamil which in my reckoning is Manodharma . Veteran connoisseurs of our music, in yester years used to rate the vidwans by their ability to scintillate like diamond through frequency variations, explained below to convey rasas and bhavas in synchrony with the emotions conveyed by the composer in his lyrics. In addition selection of ragas, keerthans, talas, gamakas also played their parts on which sufficient literature is already available. Vidwans like Tnr, Tiruvengadu, Tiruvazhimazhalai, Sembanarkoi Rramaswamy, Thirukkodikaval Krishna iyer, Saraba Sastrigal, Tnk, Dwaram, Lalgudi, Ariyakkudi, Madrai mani iyer, Maharajapuram, veena dhanammal and the likes excelled in these aspects and veterans will nod their heads in appreciation only when these vidwans scintillate with such poorippoos through their Manodharmas usually late at night between 11pm and 3am when they perform serious ULATHU (meanderings) with few swaras and ending the concerts at 6am with a Boopalam. But during this period of ULATHU all sangathis and gamakas, and bhabas/rasa like kozhavu, gambeera, anger, dainya, sadness, extreme bakthi, ET al handled in a highly skilled manner will be new and dazzling but never repeated nor can be anticipated. It is largly their musical legacy which has given the present day momentum for the growth of our music influenced by such ardent classical musicians, but the manodharma aspect has still to catch up a lot with most of the present day artists.
How this manodharma is built into? As we all know a raga or keertana is only juxtaposition of proper frequencies i.e. sruties with their intonations and modulations. In the Indian musical systems any artist can choose a particular frequency ( Within the range of audibility from 16-20000 cycles per second ) as Adhara Sadja and twice its value is the sadja for the next octave and so on called Stayies with swara PA as the midpoint of a stayee to facilitate proper reference stone for orientation . This is the same in the western classical too but with the exception other swaras are fixed frequencies like do,re,me in the western but these are small frequency bands called suddha rishabham, kakali nishadam etc on the Indian classicals. This is where the scope for unlimited manodharma is built in using the natural inability of musicians to reproduce the exactly same frequency. By way of elucidation let us imagine an artist sings Andhra gandhara on his chosen sadja in a given stayee in a controlled lab in front of an oscilloscope and repeats the same swara a few minutes later under the same controlled conditions. Will both these oscilloscopic pictures be identically same with ordinary effort? Certainly not. This, in my opinion holds the key. Can we draw a line say exactly 10cm? Impossible -it will always be 10 + or - and never exactly 10
Any raga or keertana is nothing but permitted permutations and combinations of swaras and so the artists ability to use such values of frequencies in a given band say suddha deivatam along with its intonation ie the decibel value admixed with gamakams to produce the bhava of the lyric which is the quintessence of our system and that is why it is not possible to Coney it through notations
We can set up such experiments with male, female voices, musical instruments et al and prove our point through a scientifically prepared paper / demonstration etc
We need to organize it taking into account all the logistics needed
If you find there is some worth and if you are interested in proceeding further Pl come out to. We can discuss further and plan out in detail.
It may kindly be noted that im not at all a musicologist but one who can appreciate the sciences in all the fields of human endeavor

*DEAR TOYOTA, JAPAN*
*Toyota Innova v diesel purchased during May07, REGISTRATION
NO,TN07A50655, ran only 11000km in indian roads without any accident,
suffered very serious quality problem as its two Goodyear tyres picked up
airpockets and a wheel rim got visibly bent.Toyota india is not accepting
and replacing them free under warranty
I would like to appeal to Toyota head office in japan seeking their
inervention to exhaust my
administrative remedy before going public and seeking constitutional
remedies.
I would also like to know from them whetherToyota is designed in such a way
that I have to replace parts and accessories to run it in indian roads once
in six months? Or they have enough third party certification on the quality
level of their products to run it in
india ?
Tyre dealers in india, many of them feel that the rim and the tyres chosen
are not good enough forindia .
There is also a feeling inIndia that Toyota is testing new vehicles in
India , first before
improving the quality for supplies to developed countries--
I am also pasting a similar complaint I came across from the web.
Hope my complaint will receive the due consideration
Regards,
Gopalan *NO POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM INDIAN AND JAPANESE TOYOTAS AND HENCE THIS CAUTION NOTE TO ALL FUTURE BUYERS OF INNOVA TO BE CAUTIOUS AND CHECK VERY MANY TIMES BEFORE BUYING THE EXPERIMENTAL INNOVA
* SAID PASTING OF A SIMILAR CASE EXTRACTED FROM MOUTHSHUT.COM et all
http://mouthshut.com/ GIVEN BELOW
I HAVE innova VEHICLE AND ITS 2 TYRES HAVE DEVELOPED BULGES AFTER 9700 KM
DRIVE. THE GOODYEAR PEOPLE have refused to accept that they are
manufacturing defects. It has been quite long since i have been driving
various vehicles but this is first time
my tyres have gone down with just 9700 km drive . i dont expect such a
quality from innova or
goodyear. i dont thinkToyota can give such a wonderful and costly vehicle
and compromise on tyres. i dont doubt goodyear but with so little drive if
2 tyres are gone then it seriouly requires consideration . *
* I ALREADY HAD A WORD WITH MR HARPAL FROM SHREETOYOTA AT JAMMU BUT STILL
NO COMPENSATION COULD BE ARRANGED . THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE BROUUGHT
A DEFECT TO YOUR KIND NOTICE. THE FIRST TIME WAS WHEN THERE WAS
MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THE AXLE OF MY VEHICLE AND IT WAS REPLACED BY YOUR
COMPANY . IF INNOVA SUFFERS FROM SUCH SMALL DEFECTS THERE WOULD BE FEW
BUYERS FOR THE SAME. IN FIRST CASE ALSO NO INFORMATION WAS GIVEN TO ME AS TO
THE CAUSE OF DEFECT AND ALTHOUGH IT WAS VERBALLY CONVEYED TO ME THAT ACTION
TAKEN WILL BE CONVEYED TO ME. SUCH IRRESPONSIBLE ATTITUTE IS NEVER EXPECTED
FROM THE FINEST AUTOMOBILE COMPANY OF THE WORLD . I HOPE THATTOYOTA WILL
GIVE ITS HEAVY VEHICLES ON BEST TYRES INSTEAD OF GOODYEAR WHOSE MARKET
REPUTATION IS THE WORST. THE LOCAL DEALER IN PATHANKOT ' JK TYRES HAS
STOPPED WORKING WITH GOODYEAR DUE TO FREQUENT COMPLAINTS AND WORST SERVICES
. I HOPE THATTOYOTA STUDIES THE MARKET BEFORE PURCHASING ANY OF ITS PART.
I PURCHASED THE NEW INNOVA V MODEL OUT
OF HARD EARNED MONEY AND AFTER STUDYING ALL THE REVIEWS WHICH FAVOURED
TOYOTA . ON THE VERY FIRST DAY THERE WAS SOME PROBLEM WITH TYRE AND
SUSPENSION.
THE VEHICLE WAS IN WARRANTY PERIOD AND THE COMPANY PERSONELL WERE
KIND ENOUGH TO TAKE THE VEHICLE RIGHT FROM MY DOORSTEPS FOR REPAIR BUT
IT TOOK NEARLY FIVE DAYS THE REASONS BEING 1) SPARES WERE NOT AVAILABLE
WITH THE DEALER 2) ON BEING ASKED THEY SAID IT BEING A NEW VEHICLE IN
MARKET SPARES ARE NOT AVAILABLE. MIGHT BE THE COMPANY WAS OVER CONFIDENT
ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCT 3) SPARES WERE NOT AVAILABLE ATDELHI
AND HAD TO BE BROGHT FROMBANGALORE .
IT MEANT THAT THE COMPANY IS BUSY WITH OVERPRODUCTION AND FAILED TO CHECK
THE QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY OF SPARES TO AVOID HARRASMENT TO THE CONSUMERS.
WHEN I TRIED TO GET THE VEHICLE CHECKED AT LOCAL MECHANICS THEY EXPRESSED
THEIR INABILITY TO LAY THEIR HAND ON THIS NEW VEHICLE
MY ADVICE TO ALL PROSPECTIVE BUYERS IS THAT TO WAIT FOR SOME MORE
TIME AND GIVE TIME SO THAT THE NEW VEHICLE SPARES ARE AVAILABLE ALL OVER
INDIA AND MORE MECHANICS ARE TRAINED AT HANDLING THIS NEW VEHICLE.
OTHERWISE IF YOU GET STUCK AT A PLACE WITH NO LOCAL DEALER YOU WILL HAVE TO
ABANDON YOUR VEHICLE EVEN FOR MINOR PROBLEMS

Aug 21, 2006 03:21 PM Hi Vikas, I had written the review on the basis on the test drive and the data I could collect. The points mentioned by you are very well valid and usually overlooked by the consumer due to its love for the vehicle. No one will know how many kms were driven by TKM before certifying etc.. Any diesel vehicle starts with smoke no matter how good the catlytic converter is. May be it is wise to buy a new Innova after sometime, by which they may be able to rectify all the issues. Thanks to you for bringing all the issues in mouthshut. I am yet to buy it but by reading your review I will have to be more careful on this product now!!! One thing is that everyone is exp. on Indians to get the product certified. In US/UK they will sue |

Jun 17, 2007 02:29 PM Hello Friends, When I first started to write about my experience on the Innova about a year ago there were people who found my statements out of place. People thought that it was in search of some cheap lime-light that I was making such statements against the Japanese Manufacturer. A year later I find many people are experiencing similar problems. There seems to be something seriously wrong with the front suspension of the vehicle and I have had near fatal experiences on the road driving the car with family. Result front leaked front shocker, worn out treads in the tyres and so on.My insistance that TKM was testing the vehicle at the customers expense did cause a flutter when simple errands took more than 6 - 8 visits to their dealierships, repeated telephone calls to who's who in TKM, media and a mail box full of communication. The level of competence of TKM dealers and OEM suppliers for wipers, seats upholstery, etc, etc is indeed questionable no matter what the company claims. You, never faced a problem with the Quallis because it was a model that was tried tested and withdrawn by Here is one car that is being tested in Vikaas - # 09313515838 | |

Jun 25, 2007 11:25 AM Friends, Slowly as other Innova owners are taking courage in sharing their experiences with the car and respective dealers - my initial fears are all falling into place. Indeed the product and support is not befitting brand No matter what the vehicle has had history of unstale front suspension and poor control beyon 120 Km on the road. While all of you should get into a habbit of writing your complaints to your dealers marking copies to TKM CR in Remeber it is important because it concerns your life and that of the co-passengers (usually your near and dear ones) - you must stay alert and be smart. Good Luck. |
Whistleblower lawsuit says serious auto defect reports altered at Toyota-GM California plant By YURI KAGEYAMA, AP
TOKYO -- An employee at a California plant run jointly by General Motors and Toyota is accusing her managers of allowing serious defects to go unchecked, including faulty seat belts and braking, and retaliating when she resisted, according to a lawsuit filed earlier this month.
In the case before Alameda County Superior Court in California , Katy Cameron, a certified auditor who has worked for 23 years at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., says management routinely deleted or downgraded defects from her reports on vehicles since 2005.
The lawsuit, filed Nov. 6, demands unspecified damages for retaliation against a whistleblower and intentional infliction of emotional distress from NUMMI, Toyota Motor Corp., Toyota in North America and General Motors Corp.
According to legal documents obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, defects that were intentionally passed over included broken seat belts, faulty headlights, inadequate braking, mirrors falling off, engine oil leaks and steering wheel alignment problems - all in an effort to decrease the number of defects. It is not clear whether any defects resulted in accidents.
When Cameron, a trained expert at spotting defects, complained, her bosses struck back, demoting her twice, accusing her of being crazy and violent, forcing her to submit to mental fitness tests, according to the documents.
An officer at NUMMI, the Freemont, California-based joint venture, threatened to fire her and then tried to get the personnel department to dismiss her, they say.
"NUMMI has done everything in its power to try to break Cameron psychologically and force her from the workplace," the lawsuit said. "Cameron is an American hero who will not be silenced by multibillion dollar corporations at the expense of hardworking American consumers and families."
As a result of the persistent on-the-job maltreatment and harassment, Cameron has been getting medical treatment for stress, depression, fatigue, insomnia and panic attacks, it said. She is now on medical leave.
Toyota in Japan declined comment on the lawsuit, saying it was still looking into the allegations. But it did release a statement Tuesday saying it was "tackling quality problems as a top priority."
GM spokesman in Tokyo Michihiro Yamamori said he did not know about the lawsuit.
NUMMI, set up as a joint venture in 1984, produces the Corolla subcompact, Tacoma pickup and Pontiac Vibe wagon. One of the plant's purposes was to have American workers learn Toyota 's production methods. It has been the topic of numerous labor relations studies, and the company claims teamwork and safety among its "core values."
Quality problems have been creeping up at Toyota , which traditionally has a stellar reputation for reliability. Toyota's recalls have ballooned over the last couple of years, and President Katsuaki Watanabe has promised to beef up quality control.
Last month, Consumer Reports said Toyota "is showing cracks in its armor" and will no longer get automatic recommendations from the magazine when it releases new or redesigned vehicles. It also removed several Toyota vehicles from its recommended list because of quality issues.
Toyota, which appears to be on track to beat GM as the world's biggest automaker by sales as soon as this year, recalled 766,000 vehicles in the United States last year, down from 2.2 million in 2005, but up from 210,000 in 2003.
The lawsuit says NUMMI management blocked Cameron from communicating with other departments, including the quality division at Toyota in Japan, by barring her from meetings and denying her an opportunity to be considered for travel assignments

let our minds be kindled
The great leader,,educationist and former president of India ,Dr abdul Kalam had said "For participating in the nation building tasks: the capacities required to be built among the students in their formative years by the educational institutions are: The capacity for research or inquiry; the capacity for creativity and innovation; the capacity to use high technology; the capacity for entrepreneurial leadership; and the capacity for moral leadership." His tounge had dropped manna by these words of wisdom propelling many of us to act with single minded devotion -In this context iam copying below my article which i beleive will reach far and wide and may assist many of us to partly achive some main goals of this mission.as it essays to make the students (in every sense of the term) to assimilate through a system of self enquiries /cross examinations and dissections, on applicarions/usefulness of the subject learnt inculcating and gradually making them realize / develop their own mental prowess laying a stong foundation for creative / innovative contributions and services emphasized by you to the society at large-iam ,aged 71 years and hail from a family of educators---L.GOPALAN
"LET OUR MINDS BE KINDLED" ARTICLE PUBL:ISHED IN BHAVANS JOURNE,JUNE30TH ISSUE-PAGE 77 Examinations nearing ,oh,what a torterous regime the students inflict on themselves.Literally with swollen heads ,unkept body and soul, eyes poping out as a result of sleepless nights ,consuming cups and cups of coffee, they go all out to injure their health only to cram up , vomit in the examinations and to forget most of them .Is that the objective of learning? That amount of drudgery whether at all is needed? Can we not mitigate the strain involved?Even though the semister system has gone a long way to alliviate this pain and much more can be done by all involved in the educational systems ,yet it is the students who have to help themselves takling it wisely adopting scientific and systematic methods. With the guidance of my parents and some of my gurus i have been fortunate to imbibe and improve upon such a methodology which has stood by me, well ,not only during examinations but also all along to sustain my higher learning rate.By learning i mean assimilating fully and quickly all that is read with the ability to retain and recapitulate when needed to reap the fuller benefits of a particular knowledge. For me any learning say of swimming or cycling or learning a new subject in sciences, arts , literature or philososophy is one and the same and once you learn, it should come with you to the grave .Did you ever forget swimming or cycling ?Does not this ability come to your help whenever you need ?Then why not learn other things in the same way.All you require for that is interest, involvement and commitment or in one word your attitude. It becomes relevent here to add that Karl Pearson in his book "Grammer Of science" points out that any learning is a mental construct and It is an attitude of the mind.Swami Vivekananda and many others perhaps cultivated such attitudes which enabled them to assimilate volumes with astonishing speeds, made possible by allowing their minds to leap forward to think what they would have written if they had been the authors, later browsing and checking it up and adding to their stock of knowledge all additional points. Thus they developed the attitude of putting the horse before the cart and cultivated the art of assimilating the spirit of the writing with all its nuances instead of merely making the eyes mechanically follow the display of printing ink on the paper. Why do you fretter the most powerful horse -the mind- by putting it behind the cart?If you wish to be systematic ,deep breathing exercises, meditation and mental mathematics etc can help you in a big way, to so cultivate your mind and attitude. Secondly it is axiomatic that nothing in the world should be learnt unless you know its usefulness to humanity and as a corollory, knowledge on any topic gets developed very rapidly only to meet human needs. That is why Tiruvalluvar says "karpavai karka "that which is fit to be learnt make it your own. When learning say Newtons Laws Of Motion you should first ask why at all you should learn this and whether heavens would fall down otherwise. What are all the end applications of such a knowledge ?It is a matter of great pity that not much attention is being paid to this important aspect even by renowned institutions of learning. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.Take a sample of 1000 students upto undergraduate level and ask them to mentally multiply 35 and 45 .Even though they would have crammed up (a+b)(a-b)=a2.--b2,u will find a few only will apply it limited to those who would have gone through such a mental drill earlier.More so 35*46or 33*45 etc which are nothing but 35*45+1*35 or 35*45-2*45 would be mostly beyond most.It is not my intent nor it is possible to exhaustively cover all such basic principles on which the methodology being suggested here is bult over the years-- nor i claim it to be its exclusive author --perhaps many thinking minds could have practised basically the same or in similar ways-but to come to brass tacks for the benefit of students and knowledge seekers at large.
Preferably the methodology being suggested should be adopted from school days , if not at least it should become second nature during the colligeate level . Since the collegiates are the worst affected this article concentrates on them.Annual summer vacations are not ment for merely whiling away the time .While the need for recreation is not undervalued it should have the undercurrent of enhancing your value and need based outlooks in life through continuous, silent and nonstrenuous craving for learning new things and about emerging technologies.Besides undergoing professional training programmes, and gaining hands on experience in the fields of your choice at least an hour or two every day ,should be set apart for preparations to meet the scholastic requirements of the next acadaemic year This prior preparation will put you ahead of your classmates and will serve to refresh when the teacher handles it in the class.Getting the syllabus in advance from the university , a separate note book of sufficient pages for each subject say maths, economics, history or physics should be kept in readiness and in each note book pages earmarked for each topic mentioned in the syllabus say 10 sheets for kinetic molecular theory of gases or 25 sheets for the golden period of Guptas.Keeping the syllabus in mind, each topic should be read not only from the prescribed textbook but also preferably from the classical treatises mentioned in the syllabus prescribed by the university .For this purpose one should draw deeply from public and other libraries or by cooperative arrangements between collegues.Internet and e learning by effectively using many highly proven web sites will be of immense help to enhance effortless learning. After studying a topic from a book you should try to mentally recapitulate step by step and Initially even though you may find it difficult few more readings could be given and topic should be run in mind or scanned from the begining to end. It willbe realized , that mentally reading a topic is faster and much more assimilative than verbally reading it and the results will be much more astonishing if the habit of running the topic or scanning it in mind is ultimately accomplished.Computers profitted through electronic speeds and the practitioner will now profit through mental speeds which is by far suprerior. Even if difficult to begin with ,with incessant practice as progress is made from from topic to topic, it will become your second nature since you have learnt to put the horse before the cart and in consonace with Gayatrimantra which says once the mind is kindled("prachodayat in Sanskrit") in a direction it is capable of building up at mental speeds and leads you up further and further in the right direction. Then in the alloted pages for the given topic you should write down a summary in your own words of what has been assimilated .Use of computer can greatly help in this regard The same exercise on the chosen topic should be repeated and mentally run reading from other two reference books especially to fine tune the understanding of basic concepts, removing doubts and noting down addtional points if any in the alloted pages. This will enable you to develop a total mental construct or picture helped by the summary you have written which can be recalled anytime to ponder over, cross examine ,dissect ,various aspects such as what are the end applications , at what extreme conditions say the kinetic molecular theory is not applicable and why retro rocket has to be fired for the space craft to return to earth, how the period of ocillation of a simple pendulam is related to gravitational force at a place etc.For a beginer this methodology may look cumbersome but if you are persistant you will find that the mind is helping you leapfrog almost involuntarily recapitulating and analysing things for you at an incredible speed . In due course when you study a new topic if you assume that you are the first person seized of the opportunity to develop a scientific model of it in the world and kindle your mind in that dirrection you will be astonished to note that you are even able to derive satisfactory model more or less on your own thus gradually enhancing and nourishing your analytical ,lateral thinking abilities, sharpening your originality and creativity making you stand out in competive exames and in other fields. No doubt you can also tend to assimilate as fast as Swami Vivekananda did .By this methodology your note book becomes the compendium of assimilated knowledge and aid- memoir minimising the use of going through the text and other books each time while revising .My father who as a practitioner of this methodology used to say that weeks before exminations he used to enjoy more leisure, keep his mind cool practicing music or pranayama and on the days of examination he used to complete his mental scanning in a jiffy at mental speeds in just two to three hours and ready an hour before the examination starts contrary to what we usually witness. He has also told me of many he knew who practised like this and became stalwarts and originol contributors in their fieds. You may say that this methodology is not for one and all but even if few are profitted sooner it will be emulated upon by others setting up a chain reaction. In consonance with Alvin Toffler since you have kept the end use of learning all the while you will be able to learn ,relearn and unlearn as the changing scenerios demand and will not lose labour learning without thought.Since empires of the future are the empires of the mind can india prove that Toffler is correct as india is showing up her mind now already in few fields and once again become the dominant empire by her mind ?---- by---L.GOPALAN,Additional GM,BHEL(R&D),-retd--29 MRC nagar,South beach av,Second street,Rapuram,Chennai---600028,ph-24935559 and Managing Director,HETROGENOUS COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (P) LTD.
